Three retailers expand their space at community-owned Dewsbury Arcade

The Victorian heritage building in West Yorkshire, which closed in 2016, was bought by Kirklees Council in 2020 as part of its regeneration plan

Two months after the Arcade in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, reopened as a community-run business, three independent retailers are expanding into significantly larger units, reporting exceptional demand and trading success.

Managers of the project says this highlights the growing footfall and revival of Dewsbury’s town centre, driven by community support for local, independent businesses.

The Grade-II listed arcade, which opened in 1899, is an iconic part of the town’s heritage but in its latter years suffered commercial decline and closed in 2016. In 2020 it was acquired by Kirklees Council – a member of the Co-operative Councils Innovation Network – and, backed by Lottery grants and community shares, was reopened in 2026.

Now three of the business occupying the building are set to expand.

Next Deck

Tabletop gaming and hobby store NextDeck has more than tripled its trading space, moving from an initial 14.5 sq metres to a spacious 47.5 sq metre unit. The expansion allows it to expand retail stock, host larger community gaming tournaments, and accommodate more players.

The second business, Apple Blossom Boutique has seen a surge of shoppers seeking fashion, accessories, and gifts, and has expanded from 9 sq metres to 13 sq metres, offering more display room for new seasonal ranges.

Café Nūr

And Café Nūr by Meena Moo – a popular cafe and sweet treats destination – will upsize from 37.5 sq metres to 42.5 sq metres to expand seating capacity and cater to busy weekend crowds.

“To see three independent traders outgrow their spaces within just eight weeks of opening is a fantastic milestone for The Arcade and for Dewsbury as a whole,” said Jenny, arcade manager.
