The Philippines starts celebrations for its Co-op Month

A series of events throughout October will highlight the sector’s contribution to the country’s economy

Co-operatives in the Philippines are marking Co-op Month with a series of events and activities.

The month, held every October, recognises the sector’s contribution to the country’s economy. This year’s theme is: “Co-operatives: Partners for building resilient and empowered communities towards a better and stronger Philippines”.

Throughout the month, the Isabela Provincial Cooperative Development Council is running a co-operative logo-designing contest, writing competition and quiz. Other activities include a regional conference on 10 October and a trade fair where co-ops can showcase their products.

Lilia Castillo, from the Isabela Provincial Cooperative Development office, says the celebrations end with the Faustino N. Dy Sr. Awards, which goto co-ops with outstanding management performance who are able to expand their assets for members’ benefit.

And the Philippines’ annual National Co-operative Summit is under way – running from 3-5 October in Davao City – with a focus on how co-ops can work together to overcome challenges and succeed.
