Boost for credit unions

THE Association of British Credit Unions (ABCUL) has welcomed the announcement by the Government of a &#163 6 million funding package for the credit union sector.

THE Association of British Credit Unions (ABCUL) has welcomed the announcement by the Government of a &#163 6 million funding package for the credit union sector.

"We&#039re delighted the Government has allocated a further &#163 6 million from its Financial Inclusion Fund to credit unions," said Mark Lyonette, Chief Executive of ABCUL.?

"This is a further demonstration of the Government&#039s commitment to the good work that our sector is doing in making affordable credit and banking services available to the financially excluded."

The announcement of the new money was made in the Government&#039s financial inclusion document, "Financial inclusion: the way forward", which was launched by the Treasury last week and sets out the Government&#039s financial inclusion strategy for the next spending period from 2008?2011.
