Mary Walker OBE, former mayor and leader of the London Borough of Croydon has died aged 57.
Elected to the council in 1973 as a Labour/Co-op councillor, she was leader of the council from 1994-96 having led Labour in opposition for eight years.
Mrs Walker was mayor of Croydon – the largest of Greater London's boroughs – during 2000-2001, after being deputy mayor. Mrs Walker also served on the education and member relations committee of the former South Suburban Co-operative Society.
