East of England Co-op appoints Karen McEwan as CEO

East of England Co-op has announced the appointment of Karen McEwan as its incoming chief executive.

McEwan is expected to take up the role in early spring 2027, succeeding Andy Rigby, who will step down at that time. He announced his decision step down from the role earlier this year, following three consecutive years of profit growth.

The society says she brings extensive experience in retail leadership and business transformation, having held senior roles at Tesco, Post Office, Westfalia Fruit and McColl’s, where she was CEO.

She is also a senior independent director at Delta Housing Association, a founding member of Chief, a network for women executive leaders and speaks at leadership forums.

“We’re delighted to welcome Karen to the East of England Co-op,” said society president Mandy Errington. “With her extensive retail experience, a strong track record in leadership, and a genuine passion for developing people, she brings valuable insight and expertise to our co-op.

“We’re a retailer built on strong values, with our customers and colleagues at the heart of everything we do. Karen’s people-first approach will play an important role as we continue to build on that commitment and strengthen our position as a strong, independent co-operative.”

McEwan said: “I’m really pleased to be joining a business with such a rich heritage and strong values. Having spent my career in retail, I know how important it is to stay true to those values, put customers first and create an environment where colleagues feel supported and can thrive.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know the teams and helping ensure the East of England Co-op continues to serve its members, customers and communities for years to come.”

Errington added: “On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Andy for his exceptional leadership and commitment to our co-op over the past four years. We are pleased that Andy will remain in post during the transition period, ensuring continuity of leadership and supporting with the onboarding process and ensuring a smooth handover of responsibilities to Karen.”

East of England Co-op, and independent society active in communities across Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire for over 155 years, said it “remains committed to creating value for its members and customer, supporting local communities and building a sustainable business for future generations”.
