Sandra Williamson, a long-serving board and committee member of Scotmid Co-op, has died at the age of 79.
Williamson (11 March 1947 – 5 August 2026), served on the board of the society from 1984 to 2020 and was a regional committee member for 39 years.
Throughout the period of her service she sat on various board committees, including remuneration, audit and general purposes, and also served as the chair of the East Regional Committee of the Scotmid Society Co-operative Party Council.
A life long co-operator, she became a member of St Cuthbert’s Society in 1963 when she was 16 and was elected to its board of directors in 1978.
She was also a member of Scottish Co-operative Women’s Guild, serving as minute secretary of the eastern branch and treasurer of the guild’s Section IV executive.
In her leisure time she was an active member of Brunstane Bowling Club, serving as president and assistant ladies match secretary.
In an election statement for the society, she said: “I strongly believe that co-operative ideals and principles are the solution to many of the problems faced by our communities today.
My strength is in being an enabler and I try to build bridges of understanding whenever possible. It is part of our role to encourage new members and, if possible, active members.
“The work of a director is both rewarding and challenging and I am so grateful for the many opportunities it has afforded me over the years.”
Paying tribute, Scotmid president Eddie Thorn said: “Sandra served Scotmid on various committees for over 40 years. For a long part of this dedicated service she was a much valued director of the society and someone always ready to support and advise new members to the board.
“Sandra will be remembered as a loyal member of Brunstane Bowling Club and a true co-operator.”
