Co-op Group National Members’ Council elections 2016

The Co-operative Group National Members’ Council, which exists to “exists to uphold our values and principles and hold our Group Board to account”, has welcomed 24 new and returning members.

For the 2016 elections, 24 seats were available for a three-year term of office, across all constituencies except the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland. An additional seat in the West Midlands constituency was available for a two-year term. Nominations were open until 19 February, with elections conducted by ballot in advance of the Group’s annual general meeting on 21 May.

“The national members’ council is made up of elected members from every nation and region in the UK, and it is the council’s primary responsibility to ensure that our society is run in proper alignment with our values and principles,” said council president, Nick Crofts.

To stand for election to the Council, nominees had to have been a Group member since at least 5 January 2013 and accrued at least 1,000 membership points between 4 January 2015 – 2 January 2016, 500 of which must have been earned through spend in a wholly owned business of the Group. The application included a short online test of candidates’ knowledge on the organisation.
