Market Town presents How to Run a Co-op?

1 October 2015 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for an evening dedicated to de-mystifying and explaining different options of organising co-operatives and social enterprises. Throughout the evening you will hear from:
Ian from CASE: a workers co-operative based in Leicester that delivers advice and support to enterprises that are people-centred, accountable and ethical.

Cath from Footprint Workers: a small ecologically minded printers based in Leeds that is also a member of Radical Routes, a network of radical co-ops whose members are committed to working for positive social change.

These talks will be followed by Q&A sessions in smaller groups.

This talk is part of the project Show Me How, an opportunity for sharing and learning useful skills. Show Me How is an exploration of the possibility of a culture of shared knowledge and resources. The project is initiated by artist Ania Bas. Show Me How has been developed as part of Market Town, a programme of new commissions and critical debate that sets out to re-imagine the future of Loughborough’s high streets.

CASE

CASE is a workers’ co-operative, or employee owned company, which was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee in Spril 1984 as the Leicester and County Co-operative Development Agency. It later changed its name to CASE to reflect the fact that its activities had become increasingly broad, both geographically and in the kinds of enterprise they support. CASE provides its clients with advice, training, counselling, and financial sourcing, and aims to give them the necessary knowledge and skills to be sustainable, self-reliant, and co-operative.

Footprint Workers

Footprint Workers Co-operative is a small, ecologically-minded printers based in Leeds. Its members made the decision to run as a workers’ co-operative in order to enable them to pursue jobs they found creatively and intellectually stimulating, but also to better meet their ethical and ecological objectives. They aim to be straightforward, friendly, responsible, and responsive, and print their outputs using, powered a green electricity tariff, and on recycled paper.

Footprint is a member of Radical Routes – a network of radical co-operatives whose members are committed to working for positive social change. The network is made up mainly of housing co-operatives of various sizes (none with more than 17 members), a few workers’ co-operativess and a few social centres. Radical Routes is a form of structured mutual aid; in other words, it is based on people helping each other in organised ways. Radical Routes is about people taking control of their own housing, work, education and leisure activities by managing these activities the way they want them to be managed.
