Saith Seren, a community-owned pub in Wrexham opened its doors in January 2012.
It offers food and drink downstairs and a range of community services upstairs, including Welsh language lessons and space for toddlers’ groups and other small community groups. “We’re basically a community hub for the Welsh language community in the Wrexham area”, says Marc Jones, chair of Saith Seren.
The pub’s co-operative nature sets it apart from other local pubs, says Mr Jones. “We’ve got a broader community base, which is able to draw on a large population, and people have seen the pub as a natural hub from the outset, a centre for the entire community.
“We’ve created a sense of ownership and confidence that we can do things for ourselves – and the community, which was fairly anonymous or marginalised, now feels that we’ve got a centre, somewhere that we run ourselves.”
