IOWA CITY, IA (October 1, 2013) – National Cooperative Grocers Association (NCGA), a business services cooperative for retail food co-ops across the United States, today announced the addition of one new member and one new associate co-op, bringing the association to 136 food co-ops in 37 states with combined annual sales of more than $1.5 billion.

“We’re thrilled to welcome our new affiliate co-ops and the communities they serve,” said Robynn Shrader, chief executive officer for NCGA. “The growth in our membership mirrors growing consumer demand for good food and community-owned businesses across the nation, from Alaska to Georgia. We are very proud to be a part of each of our new co-ops’ future.”

New Member Co-op

Fairbanks Community Co-op Market – Fairbanks, AK
Fairbanks Community Co-op Market opened in March 2013 and is the only operating food co-op store in Alaska. With 2,200 active members and 24 employees, Fairbanks is projected to reach $2.5 million in sales in its first year.

New Associate Co-op

Daily Groceries Co-op – Athens, GA
In late 1992, the Daily Groceries Co-op opened its doors in the former Daily Groceries general store to serve the consumer needs of downtown Athens. Now celebrating 20 years, the co-op continues to grow and deliver on its mission to embody progressive cultural transformation through socially and environmentally conscious practices as a democratically run, not-for-profit natural foods store.
