One of the key differentiators of the cooperative and mutual model is ‘sustainability’. The forthcoming International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) Conference and ICMIF Conferences (run consecutively between 2 and 8 November, Cape Town, South Africa) both promise opportunities for delegates to fully explore this theme.

The ICA Sustainability Scan

The ICA has commissioned a first-of-a-kind, global sustainability scan, conducted by the Sustainability Solutions Group (SSG), a Canadian-based worker cooperative and a leading consultancy in sustainability. The results of this scan will be shared during an interactive session at the ICA Conference (2-5 November, 2013) and expects to identify trends and themes regarding how cooperatives understand sustainability and how they implement their agenda in this space. ICA Director General, Charles Gould, reveals more about their plans in his blog of 18 August.

ICMIF Sustainable Insurance Session

ICMIF will be offering a breakout session at its ICMIF Cape Town Conference (6-8 November, 2013), dedicated to sustainability and featuring guest speaker Butch Bacani, Programme Leader of the Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI), established by the United Nations Environment Program – Finance Initiative (UNEP-FI). Butch also heads up the investment team of the Principles for Responsible Investing and has a vast experience in financial services.

Faye Lageu, Vice President, Shared Intelligence, ICMIF, said: “This session will explore how sustainability creates competitive value for mutuals/cooperatives; how ICMIF members are already making their mark in sustainability; and how the PSI can help our sector move forward in the contexts of strategy and leadership.”
