The Co-operative Group has appointed a former Tesco boss as its Trading Director.

Michael Fletcher joins the Co-operative Food senior leadership team after working at Tesco for 22 years, where he held a variety of roles, including Commercial Director in Malaysia and, latterly, as Commercial Director for Group Procurement.

The appointment has been described by Retail Chief Executive Steve Murrells as part of a new strategic direction for the business, which also includes the addition of a Customer Change Director.

Ian Ayling, a former marketing consultant at the Group, has taken on the new role where he will be reporting to Andrew Mann, who recently joined the society from Sainsbury’s, where he was Director of Insight and Loyalty.

Mr Murrells said: "This is an exciting time for The Co-operative, as we embark on a new long-term strategic plan to drive the business forward. Our initial focus on doing the basics better is already paying dividends in terms of sales, and these appointments bring a wealth of new experience and leadership to help maintain this momentum.  The new appointments will be instrumental in delivering our long-term strategy, and will help shape the future direction of The Co-operative Food."
