Nelson Kuria, Group Chief Executive Officer of CIC Insurance Kenya, has been elected to chair the inaugural committee on microinsurance for Africa.

The committee, established by the African Insurance Organisation (AIO), will oversee the growth of microinsurance in the continent, to better serve the populations which are currently uncovered by traditional insurance products.

CIC Insurance Group, an ICMIF member organisation, is a pioneer in microinsurance market and the preferred underwriter for the 10 million-member cooperative movement in Kenya.

Nelson is the only Kenyan in the committee, which consists of market leaders already engaged in microinsurance or preparing to enter the market.

Other countries represented in the inaugural 13-member committee are South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, Ethiopia, Ghana and Sudan.

Nelson has attributed his election to the recognition of his personal role and contribution and the leading role of CIC Insurance Group in the development of microinsurance in Africa.

Last year, Nelson was honoured with the Lifetime Award during the 3rd Annual Insurance Awards organised by Think Business. This is a special award conferred on an individual as voted by CEOs of insurance companies, brokers and agencies for having made the greatest contribution to the growth of insurance industry.
