The International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation / Regional Association for the Americas (ICMIF/Americas) elected new officers for the 2012-2013 Board of Trustees at its recent Annual Members Meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Dr. Rafael Moliterno Neto, Chief Executive Officer of Seguros Unimed, was elected Chair of ICMIF/Americas. He succeeds retiring Chair Dennis Deters, former Executive Vice President of The Co-operators Group in Canada, who focused on the expansion of membership, programs and services during his tenure. Rafael’s challenge will be to continue this work, particularly with recruitment of new cooperative and mutual insurers in the USA, Canada and Latin America.
According to Deters, Dr. Moliterno was elected due to his strong leadership, many years of experience in the insurance industry and his strong dedication and conviction about the value of cooperative and mutual insurance model. This year Dr. Moliterno represented ICMIF at the annual conference of the Latin American Association of Insurance Supervisors (ASSAL) a policy and training forum for all Latin America insurance regulators, which took place in Quito, Ecuador.
Rafael Moliterno Neto has a medical degree from the Medical Science College of Santos with a specialty Otolaryngology. In addition, he holds a post-graduate degree in business management and an MBA in Marketing Services from the Faculty of Economics and Administration at the University of São Paulo, as well as another MBA in insurance from Fundação Getúlio Vargas and Funenseg.
He has served as President of the Unimed Medical Association of Americana, his home city in São Paulo state, as well as President of Unimed Bandeirantes Federation of Cooperatives of São Paulo. He formerly was Director of International Relations of Unimed do Brasil, President of Unimed Technology and Development Director of Unimed Foundation. Today he serves as CEO of Seguros Unimed, which is among the largest providers in Brazil for health insurance (4th), life insurance (13th) and retirement (14th), serving over 6.1 million insureds.
Supporting the movement of member-owned, democratically governed and equitable values-based insurers, ICMIF/Americas (located in Washington, DC) is the Americas regional association of the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation, whose global headquarters is based in the United Kingdom. The global network of members of ICMIF represents 221 insurers in 71 countries and collectively represents over US$250 billion in premium income. At regional level, ICMIF/Americas represents 66 cooperative y mutual insurers in 20 countries throughout North, Central and South America and the Caribbean.
