Watch the Opening Ceremony of Co-operatives United, which featured several key figureheads from across the Co-operative Movement to welcome co-operators to the culmination event of the International Year of Co-operatives.
The Ceremony set the scene for the next three days of Co-operatives United.
Dame Pauline Green welcomed co-operators from around the globe and highlighted key activities from the International Year of Co-operatives and outline the opportunity for a co-operative decade ahead.
The Director General of the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations, José Graziano da Silva, was the keynote speaker of the Ceremony. Mr Graziano da Silva has been a big supporter of the Co-operative Movement over the International Year.
He appointed two Special Ambassadors for co-operatives in June and said: “Co-operatives and producer organisations have a key role to play in bringing about a future without hunger. Standing alone, a smallholder has fewer opportunities.
“When farmers get together, they have better condition to negotiate of price and better access to assets and services such as information, communication, input and output markets, natural resources, from local to international levels.”
Other speakers at the Opening Ceremony included: Chair of the Co-operative Group, Len Wardle, Director-General of the ICA, Charles Gould and CEO of Desjardins, Monique Leroux.
Ms Leroux presented the Declaration from the 2012 International Summit of Cooperatives, that took place between 8 – 11 October in Quebec. The Declaration was created with input from almost 2,800 representatives from 91 countries.
The Declaration will feed into the Blueprint for the Co-operative Decade, that will be presented at the Extraordinary General Assembly later in the day.
