Bringing together co-operators from the UK and all over the world, Co-operative Congress 2012 is the UK co-operative sector premier event aimed at exploring the future of the co-operative movement. The Congress takes place on Thursday, 1 November and is one of the main sessions of Co-operatives United. 

In the light of the International Year of Co-operatives, Co-operative Congress will be focused on “Growing the Co-operative Economy”, featuring various presentations and discussions on the topic.

Ed Mayo, Secretary-General of Co-operatives UK, will launch the debate with a keynote address, opening the morning session (10:00-12:00), themed “A Case for Change”. Industry experts and leaders of the co-operative sector will share ideas on the potential for a co-operative economy as a viable alternative, promoting action for change.

The session will feature presentations from Peter Hunt, policy and public affairs advisor, Kristen Christian, founder of Bank Transfer Day and Carlo Borzaga, President, EURICSE.

In the afternoon session (14:00-16:00), entitled “How to grow a co-operative economy”, experts will share international best practices, launching on a debate on the co-operative economy, with discussion and Q&A.

Speakers include Monique F. Leroux, President and CEO, Desjardins Group, giving live examples of how to effectively run co-operatives. Zhang Wangshu, director in the International Co-operation department of All China Federation of Supply and Marketing Co-operatives and Mikel Lezamiz, Director of Co-operative Dissemination for the Mondragon Co-operative Corporation also feature as presenters in this session.

Co-operative Congress 2012 will be facilitated by Stephanie McGovern of the BBC, who will also join Peter Marks in the closing plenary. Interpretation facilities will be provided.

Co-operative Congress takes place at Exchange Auditorium and registration starts at 9:30.
