I have spent the past two days at the Imagine conference learning about concepts and ideas related to the future of co-operatives in the new economy. In this opening day of the Quebec International Summit of Co-operatives, today’s conversations have brought me to understand why this little co-operative movement is one billion people strong.

One billion people – that’s one hell of a democracy – and we’re all voting to put ourselves and our interests first by making our community better. Just like everything in life that matters, the co-operative model is simultaneously selfish and selfless.

It is so inspiring to see a room full of people working together in new ways in order to build a better world. The discourse on stage coupled with the hallway meetings and side conversations are going to change a lot of ways that this sector does business. And its going to matter. This little summit thing is a really, really good idea.

I can’t wait to see what happens next.
