Euricse, the European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises, launched 2 major projects to highlight the 2012 International Year of Cooperatives, including:
A conference entitled “Promoting the understanding of cooperatives for a better world”, held on March 15 and 16, in Venice, Italy, was an opportunity to study and promote the specific nature and contributions of societies that focus on the human element as part of a new economic model.
The results of this study were published in a report entitled “Promoting the understanding of cooperatives for a better world.” This document is written by Carlo Borzaga, President of Euricse and speaker at the Summit, and Giulia Galera, responsible for the Research area at Euricse. It draws mainly, but not exclusively, on the papers and presentations delivered by the invited speakers. This analysis, started at the Conference, which brought together more than 50 scholars from many different countries and disciplines, examines the role of cooperatives in contemporary economies and is focused on the economic and social importance of cooperatives, both from a theoretical and an empirical point of view. The document offers multidisciplinary reflections on how diverse cooperative forms can contribute to shaping a sustainable economy and a fairer society. It examines the rationale, role, and size of cooperatives in various economic sectors. Existing theories are for the first time critically analyzed and confronted with empirical evidence. Thus, the conference provided the conditions for the construction of new empirical knowledge and the development of theoretical frameworks that can further our understanding of the potential of cooperative enterprises.
The International Summit of Cooperatives provides an opportunity to share the main findings of the Italian conference and to help identify common development, promotion and growth strategies for cooperatives throughout the world.
stories.coop is a joint project by ICA/Euricse. It is the world’s first global digital campaign to spread the benefits of cooperation through the tradition of story-telling. This is the indispensable complement to the many other initiatives promoted during 2012 in the international cooperative movement. ICA and Euricse like to think of it as the “soundtrack” of the IYC: a multitude of voices joining together to represent the complexity and reach of a formidable model of economic and social development. The project started on January 1, 2012 and since then a new cooperative story has been published every day. In a past 9 months, more then 300 stories have been published online and the website is becoming a very representative data base of cooperatives on an international level. Share your cooperative story on stories.coop.
