Cooperative leaders will be celebrating a unique International Cooperative Day on July 7, 2012, as it falls during the 2012 International Year of Cooperatives.

Prominent figures from the cooperative movement and the UN have shown their support for the International Day and posted video messages praising the work of cooperatives globally. This includes UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who praised the work of cooperatives saying, “by contributing to human dignity and global solidarity, cooperatives truly do build a better world”.

Dame Pauline Green, President of the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA), described cooperatives as a “huge and inspiring movement…The critical thing for us this year is to raise the profile of our inspirational movement, and tell the stories about these wonderful cooperatives. We hope that at the end of this year, we will pivot and transition from a really successful exciting International Year to a decade of cooperative growth.”

A statement for the 90th ICA International Cooperative Day has also been released by Chuck Gould, Director General for the ICA, with the theme: ‘Cooperative enterprises build a better world’. The statement is available in English, French and Spanish.

Mr Gould said the year “is the time to tell the cooperative story to a wider audience. Cooperatives are a key part of the way forward for the 21st Century economy. Cooperatives are values-based enterprises. The cooperative has the greatest degree of participatory governance of any of the major enterprise models. Because of this member engagement, cooperatives reflect the values of the community.”

Also, as part of the celebrations for the International Cooperative Day, the ICA has launched a series of e-Books in collaboration with the Global News Hub to show how ‘cooperative enterprises build a better world’. The e-Books will be released in the run-up to the Co-operatives United event, which is the global culmination of the International Year of Co-operatives and will be held in Manchester in October 2012.
