Canadian co-operators are gearing up for Co-op Week 2012, which will take place from October 14-20, with International Credit Union Day on October 18. Co-op Week has been a national celebration in Canada since 1982, similar to Co-operatives Fortnight in the U.K. and Co-op Month in the U.S.
For the second consecutive year, the theme of Co-op Week will be Co-operative Enterprises Build a Better World, the theme of the International Year of Co-operatives. But this year, the focus will be on why co-operatives make communities, Canada, and the world a better place.
The Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA), in collaboration with the Conseil canadien de la coopération et de la mutualité (CCCM), the Conseil québécois de la coopération et de la mutualité (CQCM) and Credit Union Central of Canada, has created a special Co-op Week poster entitled 12 reasons why co-operative enterprises build a better world.
Inspired by the popular U.S. co-operative movement poster "10 Reasons Co-ops Rock", the poster uses artistic typography to explain the meaning behind the IYC slogan. And given that it's 2012, there are 12 reasons why co-operative enterprises build a better world! A list of the 12 reasons can be found at http://s.coop/12reasons.
There are three versions of the poster: 12 reasons why co-operative enterprises build a better world, 12 raisons pourquoi les coopératives bâtissent un monde meilleur, and 12 reasons why credit unions build a better world.
CCA is also producing a bilingual Co-op Week leaflet listing the 12 reasons together with the seven co-operative principles and facts and figures about the Canadian and global co-operative movements.
