A cooperative enterprise is a serious values-based business model that is democratically controlled by its members.
This is the gist of the message delivered by Charles Gould, the Director-General of the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) in an interview on ICMIFTV – the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation television station.
In this video interview, Gould describes the economic and financial challenges that will be addressed by the international cooperative and mutualist community at the International Summit of Cooperatives in Quebec City, Canada, from October 8 to 11, 2012.
According to Gould, the International Year of Cooperatives is an opportunity for the cooperative and mutualist movement to position itself as a sustainable economic model capable of competing with other economic models in use today "which have reached their limits."
"People want to work together to build a better world, with greater respect for people and their environment," said Charles Gould. They are temperamentally predisposed to cooperate and our movement must seize this opportunity."
