In the days before video-on-demand websites, the local theater was a centerpiece of many communities—a treat for kids, a hang-out for teens and a quiet destination for adults in need of a night out.
The Morris Theatre we know today opened in 1940 and was state-of-the-art for its time, featuring modern art deco design, high-capacity seating, retail space, an opulent lobby and a stage for vaudeville performances. In the 70 years since, the Morris Theatre has become a distinguishing feature of the community, an icon of our past and future.
For the past three years, the Morris Theatre Cooperative has gathered 214 community shareholders and raised more than $228,000 toward purchasing the building and planning major renovations that will help the one-screen theater expand and keep pace with how movies are delivered in the digital age.
