By the time an Alaskan electric cooperative finishes expanding its award-winning wind facility next summer, it will be able to claim that almost all of its power is green.

Kodiak Electric Association, Kodiak, wants to double the size of its existing three-turbine 4.5-megawatt farm, the first utility-scale project of its kind in Alaska, and is accepting bids from contractors. The co-op is also pursuing a battery energy system to integrate output onto the grid.

When combined with hydropower from a plant at nearby Terror Lake, the expanded Pillar Mountain High Penetration Wind Project is expected to supply the co-op’s consumers with about 98 percent renewable energy.
