An employee volunteer committee at a Virginia co-op that evolved into its own not-for-profit is now connecting the public and other local charities to nearby volunteer opportunities.

The group, NOVEC HELPS, began a website to help Northern Virginia charities recruit volunteers for projects and link people seeking volunteer opportunities to local causes. NOVEC HELPS operates out of the Manassas headquarters of Northern Virginia Electric Co-op.

“There is such a high need for help and people’s time is precious, so this allows the general public to have one place to visit on the Web to find various charitable activities going on in the communities,” said Donna Snelling, NOVEC’s public and government relations liaison, who’s also executive director of NOVEC HELPS.

The website streamlines the group’s operations so that requests for assistance come directly to one place. However, the organization will continue outreach efforts through its Facebook page, NOVEC’s monthly magazine and employee word-of-mouth, Snelling said.

But in case those outlets don’t work, NOVEC erected a huge purple billboard advertising the website on Interstate 66 in Gainesville.
