Following a year of negotiations, the merger between Thomas Cook and the travel businesses from the Co-operative Group and Midlands Co-operative has been completed.

The parties announced the completion of the process on October 4th. The deal was originally announced last year on October 8th.

A statement said the amalgamation of the high street travel and foreign exchange businesses will create the UK's largest multi-channel travel retailer.

As the merger was completed, Thomas Cook Group announced the appointment of Co-operative Group Chief Executive Peter Marks to its board as a non-executive director.

The appointment was announced last December, and was on the condition of a successful merger.

Michael Beckett, Thomas Cook Group Chairman, said: "This appointment further strengthens and complements the composition of our Board. I would like to welcome Peter to our Board and I am confident he will bring current and wide-ranging experience to our deliberations."
