The water should be freely flowing at a number of homes in rural St. Clair County by this time next year.
A new water cooperative, Concordia Water Cooperative, has been formed and water line construction will begin next year. For about 170 households in the region around rural Millstadt and Stookey Township, this will mean no longer relying solely on wells for water.
Joyce Kruger owns two properties in the new co-op, located within a block of the intersection at Concordia Church Road and Illinois 163. She said she has a shallow well that cannot be used for drinking water and has had to haul her own water to her properties.
“I’m very anxious for it to get started,” Kruger said. “It’s important not just for the community, but it also increase the value of our properties. It also brings us a good water source.”
