With all of the organized health and wellness programs cropping up around the county, it’s easy to miss the everyday people and efforts contributing to making this a healthier community.
One such effort recently garnered attention because it’s become so successful that it needs help.
The Columbus Bicycle Co-op, a nonprofit community bike garage that teaches residents practical skills about maintaining or building their own bicycles, has given away twice as many bikes this year than in the past.
Located in the basement of the United Way building at 1531 13th St., the co-op has supplied about 50 bicycles to community members through its Earn-a-Bike program. Participants trade volunteer hours for bike parts or entire bikes.
Residents have reported a noticeable increase in the number of cyclists on local trails and city streets.
