Youth project tackles under-age drinking

Midcounties Co-operative has funded a schools project using dance, drama and song to educate young people on the dangers of alcohol.

The society worked with Fairgame Theatre to produce a DVD and education pack to engage students and get the message across. The resource is available free to secondary schools in its trading areas and workshops can also be organised for schools.

The film features rapper Ashley Tucker who has written and stars in the title track ‘Friday Night’, plus teenagers talking candidly about excessive and under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour.

Barbara Dunne, Senior Community Co-ordinator at Midcounties, said: “This will help schools deliver alcohol education as part of their personal, social, health and economic education and citizenship remit. An estimated 630,000 11 to 17-year-olds in the UK are said to drink twice or more per week, which is very worrying and something we all need to address.”
