Society scoops silver award

Midcounties Co-operative was celebrating after achieving ‘silver’ in the UK’s leading voluntary benchmark of corporate responsibility.

It is the first time the society has taken part in the Corporate Responsibility Index, which is run by Business in the Community. Midcounties has won a string of awards in the past 12 months for its positive approach to corporate social responsibility.

Initiatives have included reducing carbon emissions, rainwater harvesting, recycling points at food stores, ‘green’ electricity used at trading outlets, a 26 per cent increase in sales of locally sourced goods, raising £200,000 for Help the Hospices, providing £92,000 to local projects and colleagues giving 27,000 hours voluntarily to good causes.
