A statement on the ICA website said Mr Barberini was “the pillar of the global co-operative movement; was committed to its values and principles and had worked to promote the movement until the very end”.
Pauline Green, Chief Executive of Co-operatives UK, sent condolences on behalf of the UK Movement to Mr Barberini’s wife, daughter and grandchildren in Italy. Said Dame Pauline: “As co-operators, we were saddened to hear of Ivano’s death.
“Our global movement has lost a dedicated and long-standing campaigner for co-operative values and principles, and a man committed to making the world a better place for humanity.
“British co-operators will remember Ivano with great affection. In particular there are strong memories of his many visits to Congress; his total commitment to the movement and the vigour which he put into his work as President of the ICA.”
Messages of condolence can be sent to the ICA at [email protected] and will be forwarded to the family.
