A £50,000 donation is to be sent to Burma from the Co-operative Group to provide relief to up to one million Burmese people made homeless by Cyclone Nargis.
The society is also accepting donations at its food store checkouts to allow customers and staff to respond directly to appeals for immediate aid.  Donations can also be made at branches of The Co-operative Bank.
All the money will be donated to the UK-based Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which will ensure donations go to the aid agencies on the ground in Burma.
Peter Marks, Chief Executive, the Co-operative Group, said: “The scale of this terrible tragedy is only just emerging, and we hope our contribution will help provide some relief to the hundreds of thousands of Burmese people who have been affected by the trail of death and destruction caused by the cyclone.
“Our customers and members have given generously to similar appeals in the past, and we wanted to make donating to the appeal as simple as possible for them by setting up an in-store facility for this.”
