THREE of the country’s biggest societies have reported record sales during the recent Fairtrade Fortnight with the conversion of the Movement’s hot beverage range to Fairtrade, including the iconic 99 Tea, proving a major success story.

The Co-op Group said average weekly sales of Fairtrade produce for the Fortnight were up 30 per cent on last year, with Co-operative Fairtrade 99 Tea one of the key drivers thanks to a 57 per cent sales uplift on 2007.

Meanwhile Midlands Co-op has reported its most successful Fairtrade Fortnight ever with sales of Fairtrade products increasing by over 26 per cent on a like for like basis compared to 2007.

East of England Co-op also reported a big increase in Fairtrade sales during the promotion, with sales up 130 per cent on the weeks prior to the event starting. A society spokeswoman said sales of Fairtrade 99 tea was up 188 per cent while sales of smoothies increased by 972 per cent. Fairtrade wine sales rose by 379 per cent.
