CO-OPERATIVES UK Chief Executive Pauline Green has welcomed a speech by David Cameron in which he espoused co-operative values and pledged to use the co-op model as a means of tackling poverty and social exclusion.

During a visit to Manchester, the Conservative Party leader set out plans for a new generation of co-op schools, invoked the inspirational message of the Rochdale Pioneers and announced the launch of what he called the "Conservative Co-operative Movement" aimed at spreading understanding of what co-operation is all about.

But while Dame Pauiline, a former leader of the Socialist Group of MEPs in the European Parliament, expressed her satisfaction that Mr Cameron had recognised the important role of co-operatives in modern day Britain, Co-operative Party General Secretary Peter Hunt said the Tory leader&#039s new found interest in co-operation was "breathtaking" and accused Mr Cameron of hijacking an education policy paper written by Children&#039s Minister and Labour/Co-op MP Ed Balls in September.
