The Co-operative Retail Trading Group (CRTG) raised almost half a million pounds at its first ever Charity Supplier Awards Dinner.
Sally Gunnell, the golden girl of British athletics, presented The CRTG Gold Awards to some of the well-known UK grocery industry companies who have made a special contribution to the success of CRTG during the past 12 months. But the main winners on the night were the charities nominated by CRTG societies to share in the success of the supplier-sponsored event.
This included a charity auction with an array of prizes ranging from a VIP package for two to the Formula One Brazilian Grand Prix to concert tickets for Wet, Wet, Wet at the new Wembley Arena.
The Children's Society received a bumper cheque for £ 200,000 on the night, but, once all the proceeds had been counted, the final total received by the Co-op Group's charity of the year was a quarter of a million pounds.
