MIDCOUNTIES, Britain’s second biggest independent co-op, has agreed a ground-breaking reciprocal deal with the Co-operative Group which will allow members of both societies to gain member benefits at each other’s businesses.

Both the Group and Midcounties have urged other societies to follow suit to end the anomaly which currently results in Co-op customers being denied their full dividend if they stray out of their normal shopping areas.

Customers signing up for Midcounties’ Co-operative Membership will also receive a dividend at Group stores and businesses and vice versa.

The initiative will be expanded further from January when the 1,157 outlets previously operated by United Co-operatives will also operate the profits membership scheme and will recognise the new Midcounties card, which — like the Group’s — features the honeycomb image and the bee logo.
