THE Co-op brand has been named as the most ethical in the UK.

Research by Gfk NOP said Co-op stores, including Co-operative Financial Services, is seen by shoppers as the most ethical brand in the country.

The Co-operative Group warned other UK companies that failures to put ethics at the heart of their business are taking a big gamble on their future.

Zoe Morgan, Director of Marketing at the Group, said: “The days of paying lip service to ethics are over. Consumers are increasingly demanding companies take major issues like climate change and Fairtrade seriously and go one step further by reflecting these concerns in their product and service offerings.

“As a member-led organisation with the longest track record on taking an ethical stance, we have both the credibility and the capability to meet this growing consumer need and this is borne out in this latest research.”

Behind the Co-op, Body Shop was the second most recognised ethical brand, while Marks and Spencer was third. Fairtrade companies Traidcraft (4th), Cafédirect (5th), Green and Blacks (7th) and Clipper Tea (13th) also topped the list.

Of the supermarkets Tesco was ranked joint 7th ethical brand in the UK, while Sainsbury’s was 10th and Asda 14th.
