ONE of the UK's best-loved comic actors has helped Southern Co-operatives to celebrate its latest new store on the Isle of Wight and accepted a donation for charity.
Geoffrey Hughes, star of Keeping up Appearances, Coronation Street, Heartbeat and The Royle Family, is well-known for his charitable work on the Isle of Wight, including being involved with the Royal British Legion (RBL).
He presented a cheque for £ 500 on behalf of Southern Co-operatives to Barry Minshull, who is the manager of the new Co-op store in Mill Hill Road, Cowes and is also chairman of the RBL club in the town.
Mr Hughes said: "The Co-op is a retailer that does a lot of good in the community so it's good to see it open another store here."
A £ 2 million investment programme into the eight former Davids group stores, based on the Island, is now near completion. As well as creating new jobs, all existing staff have been retained.
The new-look store is the largest of the Davids store group acquired last year, and will have a greater focus on fresh food while continuing to sell the popular take-away hot food.
