UNITED Co-operatives Chief Executive Peter Marks has called on the Co-op Movement to stop talking as if it is one organisation and to start acting like one by creating a single national retail society.
Speaking in a personal capacity, Mr Marks outlined his vision of a massive, all-embracing
co-operative retailing giant in a speech to the recent Co-operatives UK National Consumer Society Conference in Stratford-upon-Avon.
He said that if the Movement is to avoid extinction and survive as any sort of meaningful retail force in the UK, then both elected members and paid officials will have to display vision, leadership, desire and courage – and would have to take the bold decisions necessary to bring about a single national society, which needed to be focused, centralised, disciplined and efficient.
