A FORMER well known Co-operative Union official has died after being hit by a car whilst walking near his home at Romiley, near Stockport.

Frank Dugdale, 70, was crossing a road with his wife, June, when the accident happened on Tuesday evening.

Mr Dugdale, formerly Chief Industrial Relations Officer at the Union&#039s (now Co-operatives UK) Manchester headquarters, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mrs Dugdale, 68, has severe head injuries and is said to be "extremely poorly" in Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport.

The 19-year-old male driver of the vehicle, a Peugeot 106, was reported to be uninjured.

Stockport Road in Romiley was closed for around five hours to allow police to investigate the accident.
