WAVE, a design co-operative in Hastings, East Sussex, is demonstrating the wider benefits of social enterprises by contributing to the regeneration of its region through offering apprenticeships and ultimately giving back to its community.
The co-operative, which provides professional creative services, has tripled in size since it was established in 1987 and to accommodate this the company is relocating to the Creative Media Centre in October.
The centre has been developed to house creative industries within the Hastings and Bexhill region. All profits generated from its tenants are ploughed back into the centre as well as other regeneration projects that benefit the area.
Sally Lampitt, spokeswoman for Wave said: "The scheme lets us give something back to the local community as the apprentice will not only gain invaluable experience working for a high-profile agency alongside senior designers, but they will also gain an insight into how a co-operative business runs and this may encourage them to start their own co-op or social enterprise."
