CO-OP stores have switched their entire pre-packed produce range to degradable bags.
The degradable produce bags will be used for all pre-packed fruit, vegetable and salad products.
The bags are just as strong and safe as their standard counterparts, but fully degrade to carbon dioxide, water and a small amount of inorganic material after four years, compared to standard bags which take 100 years to fully degrade.
Co-op's across the UK use approximately 42.5 million pre-pack produce bags every year and societies have already introduced degradable carrier bags and bread wrappers.
Christine Clarke from the Co-operative Group, said: "We are proud of our ‘firsts' with degradable packaging, and in our ‘Shopping with Attitude' report we committed to introducing more environmentally-sound packaging across our range.
"Switching our entire pre-packed produce range to degradable bags shows our continued commitment to responsible retailing, as well as ensuring that we give our customers what they want."
