SCOTMID Society has announced that Acting Chief Executive John Brodie has been appointed as Chief Executive in succession to Colin Bird, who stepped down at the end of last year.

Mr Brodie, 40, a qualified Chartered Accountant who was head-hunted by Scotmid 12 years ago, becomes one of the retail Movement&#039s youngest chief officers.

He told theNews.coop: `It is a great honour to be chosen to lead one of the most progressive and forward thinking retailers in the country. However I am under no illusions that in the current highly competitive retail marketplace, we face many challenges.

`There are areas of our trading which need improving and this is already a priority.`

Added Mr Brodie: `Another priority will be looking at the present management structure and strengthening it to continue the growth of the society. Having been with Scotmid for over 12 years I am obviously well acquainted with all areas of the business.

`However I will be embarking on a series of visits over the coming months to our stores and locations to meet as many employees as possible. They are the key to the continuing success of Scotmid and it&#039s important I take their views on board.`

Mr Brodie joined Edinburgh-based Scotmid as Financial Accountant and later became Head of Finance, then Deputy Chief Executive before being named as Acting Chief Executive when Mr Bird left in December.

The society currently employs over 4,600 staff; operates 265 retail outlets in Scotland and Northern Ireland and also runs large funeral and property departments.

Scotmid President John Cronan commented: `John is well respected by the board, management and staff of Scotmid. Having been with us for over 12 years, he has shown great loyalty to the society in a number of key positions. We are all looking forward to working with him and his management team.`
