HULL and East Yorkshire Credit Union has become the first in the country to be accredited as a Fairtrade Credit Union.
Directors have approved a policy committing their credit union to the principles of Fairtrade, which guarantee that producers in developing countries receive a fair deal for their products.
During 2004 a successful Fairtrade product tasting session was held at the credit union office, in Kingston upon Hull, and Fairtrade food and drink is now made available at meetings of staff and volunteers and at member events such as the AGM.
Throughout the year Credit Union members have been supporting the City of Hull&#039s Fairtrade City Project, and in recognition of this, the Project Steering Group awarded it a certificate.
This was presented at the Credit Union&#039s AGM by Chris Church, Manager of Hull One World Shop and a Steering Group Member.
The Fairtrade Foundation accreditation is an extension of the organisation&#039s Fairtrade Town and City scheme.
