THE editorial comment in this week&#039s Co-operative News criticises what it calls the "unprincipled and unprecedented" attack on the retail Co-op Movement by rivals Somerfield.

The article accepts that intense competition is a natural part of business life, but says the distateful dirty tricks dossier circulated to 200 Somerfield store managers and revealed in the News goes beyond acceptable limits.

Says the paper: "In pressurising its employees to effectively spy on workers in a nearby, albeit rival, store and by urging them to ingratiate themsleves with staff who may well be members of the same trade union, gym, social club or parent -teachers association, Somerfield&#039s senior management has put itself beyond the pale of decency and respectability."

Adds the comment: "The retalier&#039s unprincipled and unprecedented attack is a sure sign that Co-op stores are hitting them where it hurts."
