CO-OPERATIVE Group Pharmacy has announced the acquisition of 11 pharmacies in South Wales.

The pharmacies, in Cardiff, Newport and Gwent, were purchased for an undisclosed sum from Welsh pharmacy group Howard and Palmer Limited.

All 78 staff from the pharmacies will transfer to the Co-operative Group, and the branches will be rebranded to the Co-operative Group Pharmacy trading format in the next few months.

John Makepeace, Co-operative Group Pharmacy&#039s general manager, said: `The purchase of these businesses is part of our ambitious programme for development and expansion.

`Co-operative Group Pharmacy is already strong in south Wales and acquisition of these pharmacies adds substantial market share, including a well developed prescription collection and delivery service ? which we want to extend to other nearby Co-operative Group pharmacies.`

The Cardiff pharmacies are in Holmesdale Street, Grangetown; Countisbury Avenue, Llanrumney; Heol Llanishen Fach, Rhiwbina; and at the St David Medical Centre in Pentwyn.

In Newport they are at Chepstow Road, Kelveden Street and Clytha Park Road, as well as Caerleon Road, Ponthir, north of Newport. Other branches are High Street, Caerleon; Broad Street, Blaenavon; and Monnow Street, Monmouth; all in Gwent.
