SHAUN SPIERS, Chief Executive of the Association of British Credit Unions (ABCUL), is to leave the credit union movement to take up a new post as CEO of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).
Mr Spiers, a former Labour/Co-op Euro MP, has led ABCUL since October 1999 during a time of expansion and challenge for the association and its 400-plus member credit unions.
Moves to appoint a successor will begin this weekend at ABCUL's annual conference and AGM in Blackpool.
ABCUL President Richard Collier commented: `Shaun has led ABCUL through a busy four and a half years for the movement. FSA regulation has provided enormous challenges, which the Association and its member credit unions have risen to successfully.
`Shaun leaves ABCUL in a strong position financially and with a strong staff team committed to supporting their members with the challenges of bringing quality credit union services to the people of Britain.
`On behalf of the ABCUL Board, I would like to thank Shaun for his dedication over the past few years and wish him luck in his new post.`
Mr Spiers said: `I have greatly enjoyed my time with ABCUL, working with a dynamic credit union movement which has enormous potential to develop strongly over the next few years.`
