THE historic Co-operative Congress will be held at a brand new venue next May ? the Old Trafford ground of Premier League champions, Manchester United.
It is understood the Board of Co-operatives UK has taken the decision to move the event ? scheduled for the weekend of May 21st to 23rd ? away from it's ?traditional' Manchester venue, New Century House, because of space considerations and in particular the need to accommodate more people at fringe and associated meetings and gatherings.
New Century House, headquarters of the Co-operative Group, hosted the 2000 and 2003 Congresses as well as a Special Congress in 2001.
But Old Trafford has been confirmed for Congress 2004, with Co-operatives UK Chief Executive Pauline Green predicting that the stadium will prove an ideal venue as it will be able to stage a wide range of events and activities in a convenient and modern environment.
Although no formal announcement has yet been made, it is believed the Co-operative Group's annual general meeting will also be held at Old Trafford in line with recent practice.
