UNITED Co-operatives Chief Executive Peter Marks has welcomed the recent decision by Rochdale Borough Council's Planning Committee to approve the society's plans to build a new head office in the town.
The decision means that work is likely to start on the Sandbrook Park site next month and is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.
Said Mr Marks: `We are delighted that the Planning Committee has given the green light to our plans to build a new head office in Rochdale.
`The town is well-known throughout the world as the birthplace of the modern Co-operative Movement and we already have strong links with the town through our many trading outlets in the area. We are looking forward to adding to these with the new head office.`
The new United HQ, which will be near the former CRS headquarters on the outskirts of the town, will accomodate around 30 staff currently based in the society's main office in Stoke-on-Trent.
Those transferring to Rochdale include members of the corporate services division, member relations personnel and public realations staff.
The move follows last year's merger with Yorkshire Co-operatives and is seen as being more central for the enlarged society's trading area.
