A communique following a co-operative and mutual business leaders summit in Canberra on 17 August 2011 has declared: “The sector agrees there is a need for a new national association representing the interests of the broad range of social businesses with membership drawn from co-operatives, mutuals, employee-owned businesses and other businesses operating with a mutual ethos.”

The national association for social business “could occupy a similar position in the political landscape to the Business Council of Australia.”

The Summit was convened by the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives (IYC) 2012 National Steering Committee

Delegates comprised 45 CEOs and Chairs of business in the 2011 Top 100 list of Australian co-operatives, credit unions and mutuals which is issued by Co-operatives Australia.
