This International Year of Cooperatives has been an opportunity to discover the ways in which a billion cooperative members are helping build a better world. Cooperatives and mutuals employ 100 million people across 100 countries, providing more jobs than all the world’s multinationals combined. What’s more, the 300 largest co-operatives and mutuals generate revenues of nearly $2 trillion. That’s more than the GDP of Canada — the world’s 10th-largest economy. And nine of these leading co-operatives are Canadian: La coop Fédérée, Agropur, SSQ, The Co-operators Group, United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative, Camic 92 Mutual Members, Federated Co-operatives, Wawanesa Mutual Group and Desjardins.
